The river has carved deep gorges in the limestone rocks. In the centre of this fault, running for a length of 300 m and with a width of 800 m, the river has whittled out meanders as it sought a more direct route, abandoning its former river bed. An impressive cirque can be seen here, resembling a natural funnel.
At the very bottom, we find the village of Navacelles in a leafy oasis. A botanical trail which is suitable for all visitors has been created here.
A site to be visited whatever the time of year
Each season creates its own magical atmosphere here.
In summer, the cicadas stridulate in the glaring light and heat.
In winter, the bottom of the cirque is obscured by the fog, creating a silent, cocooned atmosphere.
On the limestone plains, dolmens, menhirs and cromlechs bear witness to the ancient rites and beliefs of the peoples who lived here back in the Neolithic period.
The Baume Auriol viewpoint offers a magnificent panoramic view. You can also stop off for a meal. The information point and exhibitions provide details of the site and its attractions.
